At thirteen years of age, Derek Hough moved to London to continue dance training under the supervision of professional dancers, Corky and Shirley Ballas, whose son Mark, was about the same age. He was later joined by his younger sister Julianne, and all three attended the Italia Conti Academy of theatre arts.

Aside from dancing, Derek has become a talented choreographer, actor and musician, playing the role of Ren in Footloose-The Musical and more recently in the Broadway show Burn the Floor, along with Mary Murphy and Kym Johnson.

Also passionate about music, Derek was one of the founding members of the Ballas Hough Band (BHB), formerly know as Almost Amy.

He and his buddy Mark Ballas have been playing and creating music together for years in between dance training and competitions.

Their first album, simply called Ballas Hough Band, was released on March 10, 2009, on the Hollywood Records label.

He and his sister Julianne, who has also been a DWTS professional dancer, sang a duet together entitled "Dreaming Under the Same Moon" for Julianne's first album.
