As a young teen, Karina emigrated to United States and became a US citizen. She finished high school, and attended University in New York, before pursuing a career in ballroom dancing.

Her professional partnerships thus far include Roman Nabatov, Paul Killick, Louis van Amstel, Slavik Kryklyvyy, and Dmitri Timokhin.

The longest and most successful of these partnerships was with Slavik Kryklyvyy (2001-2005). The pair also choreographed the Tango used in the block buster movie Shall We Dance!

On December 31, 2008, Karina and Maksim Chmerkovskiy announced their engagement to be married. The couple recently danced together professionally in the Broadway show, Burn The Floor, and are currently preparing for another season of ABC Dancing With The Stars.
